Time magazine columnist Mark Thompson proposed Haiti to become the 51st state after the 2010 earthquake. The massive earthquake devastation prompted a quick and widespread response from the United States. The US military quickly used Haitian air and sea ports to provide aid.

 Puerto Rico is Spanish for "rich port". Puerto Ricans  often call the island Borinquén, a derivation of Borikén, its  indigenous   Taíno  name, which means "Land of the Valiant Lord". The terms boricua and borincano derive from Borikén and Borinquen respectively, and are commonly used to identify someone of Puerto Rican heritage. The island is also popularly known in Spanish as la isla del encanto, meaning "the island of enchantment". Columbus named the island San Juan Bautista, in honor of Saint  John the Baptist , while the capital city was named Ciudad de Puerto Rico ("Rich Port City"). Eventually traders and other maritime visitors came to refer to the entire island as Puerto Rico, while San Juan became the name used for the main trading/shipping port and the capital city.        In 1721 Hans Egede sailed to Greenland on an expedition to convert the old Norsemen to Protestantism.  All he saw were the remnants of a crumbling church.  The Vikings had vanished.  He wrote:  “What has been the fate of so many human beings, so long cut off from all intercourse with the more civilized world?... Were they destroyed by an invasion of the natives… or perished by the inclemency of the climate, and the sterility of the soil?”

  Today, the "fifty-first states" are territories that are dependent on the United States or directly want to become part of the United States. In this presentation, we will not be talking about the counties that want to become states. Our goal is to find out why the "fifty-first states" exist at all. Mexico In 1847–48, with the United States occupying Mexico at the conclusion of the Mexican–American War, there was talk in Congress of annexing the entirety of Mexico. The result was the Mexican Cession, also called the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo for the town in which the treaty was signed, in which the U.S. annexed over 40% of Mexico.
